REAL PROBLEMS, REAL SOLUTIONS

CASE STUDIES

My clients range from startups to established law firms, from solo-preneurs to mid-size, family-run businesses. Each comes to me with their own needs and challenges, and I work closely with them to provide customized solutions. Here are a few examples.

CASE STUDY #1

Professional relationship began with a clean-up job

Challenge

A small law firm sought me out because their bookkeeping situation was causing angst-filled nights. The balance in their trust bank account did not agree to the balance on their books, and neither of those balances agreed to the timekeeping software’s trust ledger balance. I came on board to clean up the mess.

Solution

I started by reviewing the client’s trust ledger report, then the client and I had an extensive conversation about their level of confidence in the trust ledger. As I am somewhat to very versed in various law practice softwares, I was able to develop a customized plan.

I began from an agreed-upon moment in time, and I reviewed and audited every transaction. In short order, I had the balances across the trust ledger, bank account statements, and balance sheet all in agreement.

CASE STUDY #2

Accounting doesn’t have to feel like a foreign language

Challenge

When I met this small business owner, they were confused and frustrated with their accountant. The information they needed to know about their financial situation was not being communicated in an understandable fashion. As a result, they felt uncertain about the accuracy of their affairs—a painful situation that kept them from paying full attention to their customers. They came to me seeking a new solution.

Solution

We had several open, frank conversations during which I listened to what these folks really needed to know, hear, see, and understand about their business on a regular basis. In regards to compliance, I advised them on what needed to be done and when. I also determined what information they need to run their business with confidence.

I gave them a strong foundation, then I created a process for clear, ongoing communications about the state of their affairs. I now provide monthly financials, and we have frequent discussions about their burning questions—in a language they understand.

CASE STUDY #3

Growing with the times—so the office can grow

Challenge

I was referred to a small law firm whose long-time bookkeeper was retiring. When I stepped in to evaluate their systems, I discovered their programs and processes had not grown with the times—or the firm. No accounting functions were automated or electronic. Instead, almost everything was prepared and recorded by hand and on paper. Bills came in by mail, paper checks went out in the mail, and a lot of energy was invested in keeping up.

Solution

With my recommendations, we implemented a new system. Today everything is handled remotely, bills are paid on time, payroll is processed via direct deposit, receivables are efficiently managed, financials are issued monthly, and all accounting information is accessible online. With their accounting functioning more efficiently, the firm was able to invest their energy elsewhere, and they’ve since doubled in size.
